Queima da Palhinha (Burning of the cr\u00e8che), Casa de Iemanj\u00e1 (S\u00e3o Lu\u00eds, Maranh\u00e3o)

One of the celebrations reported in an earlier post is the ceremony of Queima da Palhinha<\/em> \u2013 the symbolic removal of the cr\u00e8che\/nativity scene and honoring of the Christ child.<\/p>\n

The \u201cstraw\u201d of the manger is burned \u2013 in this case an the herb murta which gives off a dense smoke and incense smell.<\/p>\n

An earlier post showed the ceremony in a private home and in the Casa das Minas<\/em>. The one in these photos took place in the House of Iemanj\u00e1, a spiritual house dedicated to the orix\u00e1 of the sea.<\/p>\n

It was a mixed ceremony with Christian songs and prayers in Portuguese. Later, there was another ceremony devoted to other entities of the house that are in the African-Brazilian tradition.<\/p>\n

An unusual feature of religious life in S\u00e3o Lu\u00eds, and in Maranh\u00e3o generally, is the blending or juxtaposition of different spiritual traditions.<\/p>\n

The photos below are from the queimada<\/em> ceremony, except for the final photo which shows the pae de santo<\/em> leading the ceremony that followed.<\/p>\n

Celebrants feed the fire near the close of the ceremony. There are till some songs and prayers to come after all the celebrants who wish have the opportunity to toss herbs on the fire.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
